In 2007, the club travelled to Nottingham with past Championship competitors; Martin Nugent and Phil Beaty (M J18 2X) and Kate Brown and Jodie Mark (W J18 2X and W J18 2-) and a few new faces; Connor Mark and Matt Gawne (M J14 2X) and Alex Hill (W J15 1X). Bronze was the reward for Jodie and Kate in their Pairs event, after having to withdraw from the Doubles event due to weather conditions and insufficient rest time. The crew of Connor and Matt were unfortunate to miss out on a bronze medal, coming fifth and only 1.5 seconds behind 3rd position.
In 2009, the club took several crews down to the National Championships - Mens Junior 16 2X (Matt Gawne and Connor Mark), Mens Junior 15 4X+ (Jack Glenholmes, Alex Rose, Alex Widdowson, Martin Wilson and Beth Bareham) and Womens Junior 16 4+ (Catherine Gammage, Rosella Brown, Bethany Tidmarsh, Claire Nugent and Louise Corker).
Connor and Matt were the ultimate winners of the weekend, gaining a Bronze medal but not in the double. They teamed up with two rowers from Durham School BC to compete in Mens Junior 16 4-. Deciding to pull out of the double to concentrate on the four was a winning choice for the boys.
Last year saw the boys Junior 16 4- of Jack Glenholmes, Alex Rose, Martin Wilson and Cambois sculler Shaun Jamieson rewarded with a silver medal at the British Rowing Championships.
An even bigger reward was given to Catherine Gammage and her composite team mates from Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham, after finishing fourth in the final of Womens Junior Coxless Fours at these Championships were selected to represent England at the Home International Rowing Regatta in Cork, Ireland. The girls finished in second place, behind Scotland but ahead of Ireland and Wales.
The club currently have two qualified A.R.A. coaches and several non-qualified coaches and a strong junior membership with ages ranging from 12 to 18 years of age. We travel to compete in regattas throughout the year across the North of England and Scotland, so not only is rowing a great way of staying fit and active, it is also a good way of meeting people and making new friends from other clubs in various regions.
Many of our juniors have gone on to row at college and University level, so rowing can also be a great help at furthering your education.
