Talkin Tarn Amateur Rowing Club has always had a strong tradition in junior rowing dating back to the 1970’s. In this period the club produced some excellent junior crews, the pick of these were the junior 16/18 Coxed Four of G.Mark, P.Scott, D.Scott, and D.Carruthers.
And the slightly older crew comprising of R.Windle, J.Cooper, S.Rutherford, B.Hudspath and cox of both crews K.Carruthers. These two crews won races at regattas all over the North of England and Scotland.
They were the first crews from the club to compete at the National Rowing Championships of Great Britain, representing the club several times at this event and making the finals on three occasions but narrowly missing out on the medal podium.
This was put right in the early 1980’s by Andrew Sinton who won a Bronze medal at the 1983 Championships when competing in the Junior 18 Single Sculls. Andrew was then selected for the England v France Junior Match. Later, while rowing for Notts County Rowing Association made it in to the Great Britain Light Weight Squad for several World Championships. Culminating with the 1996 Olympic Games at Atlanta where in the Light Weight Double Sculls, he and partner Nick Strange who sustained a rib stress fracture in training finished in a respective 11th place.
The club returned to the medal rostrum at the 2003 Championships when Kayleigh Warwick and Jodie Mark won a Silver medal in the Womens Junior 14 Double Sculls at Strathclyde Park, this followed another Silver medal while representing the North of England at the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta at the Nottingham Water Sport Centre. These two girls, along with Danny Mark, were the first from the club to be selected for the Northern Regional squad.
Then in 2004, a Bronze was the reward this time when Danny Mark and Carl Maw took part in the Mens Junior 18 Double Sculls.
In 2005, the girls Junior 16 Double Scull crew of Kate Brown and Jodie Mark agonisingly missed out on a medal, when they finished fourth in the final, missing the Bronze by less than 0.5 of a second.
All this success helped Graeme Mark be awarded with the Junior Coach of the Year Award for the North East of England Region 2004 and, along with the club, receive recognition from the clubs Governing Body, the Amateur Rowing Association, for all their success and development in Junior Rowing at club level.
